Asked by Brennan if he believed Trump would pull out on May 12 - the deadline for the president to issue a new waiver to suspend Iran sanctions as part of the deal - Corker responded, "I do, I do". His dismissal this week may hasten its demise.

The proposal follows weeks of talks between the State Department and European powers as they try to mollify the Trump administration, which is split between those who want to tear up the agreement and those who wish to preserve it.

While such a scenario is unlikely, the fact it is being floated as an option may give United States officials more leverage in negotiations with European signatories to salvage the accord by toughening it.

If Trump doesn't sign the waiver on May 12, the U.S. sanctions go back into force, putting the USA in violation of the terms of the deal.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has responded to a report that three European countries are mulling new sanctions on Iran to pacify USA demands regarding a tough approach to Iran. The changes the administration is seeking include the indefinite extension of limits on Iran's uranium enrichment and other nuclear activities and an intensified inspections regime. On Tuesday, Trump upped the ante by removing pro-deal Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. "With Mike, Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process". President Trump, however, has been holding out for the European Union to commit to imposing changes on the nuclear deal itself. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Corker, along with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., "rolled out the red carpet" for the deal with that legislation.

If Pompeo is confirmed, Trump will have at his side an adviser who is equally as hard line on Iran and a harsh critic of the 2015 multilateral agreement between the United States and other world powers.

European officials stress that they share the United States concerns, and say they're making progress with the USA, particularly on measures to address Iran's ballistic missiles.

Iranians are particularly concerned about Tillerson's firing because there is speculation that he was at odds with Trump over the standing of the deal. Hook has been negotiating with Europeans on possible "fixes" to the deal, primarily involving Iran's ballistic program, support for militant groups such as Hezbollah and sunset clauses that cause various limitations on Iran to expire years from now.

On Trump's threats to withdraw from the deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the ambassador said, "If we think wisely, there's no need to exit the nuclear deal". "There is a lot we agree on, and where we disagree we are working to bridge our differences".

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said that "such replacements in the US establishment are not surprising".

"The missile dimension, the weaponisation effort, the nuclear component itself".

President Trump has vowed to walk away from the 2015 agreement in mid-May unless European countries join the U.S.in addressing what the president says are its fatal flaws.
