TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The political and legal fallout from Florida Gov. Rick Scott's decision to sign a sweeping gun bill into law following a school massacre was almost immediate as the National Rifle Association filed a lawsuit to stop it and political candidates in both parties criticized it.

Florida's new law makes it one of just three states, including IL and Hawaii, that set an age limit of 21 for rifle purchases.

'If counties don't want to do this, they can simply say no'.

Bondi also lauded the students of Stoneman Douglas, many of whom have called for tougher gun laws.

It also includes a provision requiring Florida Teacher Unions to go through a re-certification process if their membership levels fall beneath a certain level.

Most provisions of the law will take effect immediately, while the ban on the sale and possession of bump stocks kicks will not begin until October. This age-requirement part of the law apparently exempts those who work as law enforcement officers and security personnel.

Teachers in some states, including Texas, can carry concealed weapons if they have required training.

The increasingly unpopular NRA quickly moved to block the legislation, however, asking a judge to remove the ability of the state to enforce its own laws. Yet, this raises another troubling question that should be pondered here, which is: if it's now wrong to sell guns to those under the age of 21, is it not also wrong to send them to war to kill people "over there"?

The bill's narrow passage reflected a mix of Republicans and Democrats in support and opposition. "You've got a lot of hunters and you've got a lot of guns".

"More needs to be done, and it's important for the country to be united in the same way the 17 families united in support of this bill", Pollack said after the vote. "I'm sure there are NRA members that agree with this bill, some that don't agree with this bill".

On the other side of the aisle, the new regulations on purchasing firearms -- the first gun restrictions approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature in almost two decades -- divided the GOP caucus.

Andrew Pollack, whose daughter was among those killed, said more needed to be done, but there was enough good in the bill that it should pass. Prosecutors could seek the death penalty if Cruz is convicted of first-degree murder. Prosecutors have 45 days to decide.

Florida lawmakers approved the legislation earlier this week with the state House voting 67-50 to approve the bill and the state Senate passing it by a 20-18 vote.
