Everton boss Sam Allardyce admitted he the felt pressure ease after Cenk Tosun doubled the Toffees' lead in the 2-0 win over Brighton at Goodison Park.

The Seagulls defended manfully until the hour mark before Gaetan Bong's own goal broke their resistance, and the visitors were inflicted with further harm when Cenk Tosun bagged a vital second for the hosts.

Allardyce's men, up to ninth in the Premier League, went into the contest having lost their previous two games at Burnley and Watford.

He told Sky Sports: "It was [a bad day at the office], if we play at a level like that, we will find it hard to win any Premier League games".

Brighton's bad day was compounded by Anthony Knockaert's red card for a two-footed challenge on Leighton Baines, meaning he will miss the next three games.

"In a first-half period where I didn't think we were great, we did restrict them to minimal chances, defending a lot of corners".

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won the player award after scoring four goals in three games.

He said: "The quality told in the end".

Wayne Rooney was trialled as a striker in the opening stages of the season, however, has since been deployed in a deeper midfield role, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin, undoubtedly a player with huge potential, perhaps is not quite yet ready to be starting up top week-in-week-out in the Premier League.

Asked about Walcott's fitness status at his post-match press conference, Allardyce explained: 'Cramp, so he should be OK.

And of the Seagulls' performance, he said: "I was surprised, particularly with the form we have been in".

"If we play at a level like that, we'll find it really hard to win Premier League games".

Chris Hughton has lamented his Brighton team for not spotting the "warning signs" during the first half of their eventual 2-0 defeat to Everton.
