'A Wrinkle In Time' Proves That Love Wins - But What About Physics?



But for now, she hopes "A Wrinkle in Time" connects with moviegoers and encourages them to follow their dreams. Disney's A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay and adapted from the beloved Madeleine L'Engle novel, is nothing more than a disappointing yawn of a journey to a forgettable land that won't leave a lasting impression.

Visually, "A Wrinkle in Time" is strong, with its fantasy environments looking like something out of a Final Fantasy game. Exactly what a tesseract is, and how it functions, and where it takes them, is under-defined, summed up in vagaries about lightspeed and quantum mechanics. Maybe that's one of the oddities that are just hard to pin down about this film. "But you have to write the sonnet yourself".

He was the guy in 'Wonder Woman.' Yeah, he's the guy in this, too. And in a time when many of us are putting a premium on giving girls the tools they need to fight oppression, stand up to stereotypes and embrace the differences that make them who they are, she is also the kind of role model who deserves a return to the spotlight. In theory, it shouldn't mean much; white men have made far worse and failed upwards for decades.

The film depicts Meg as brilliant, but terribly hurt due to her NASA scientist dad (played by Chris Pine) having gone missing for four years, while school, and life in general, sucks. As the nearly frighteningly precocious Charles Wallace, Deric McCabe is able to portray the characters intense intelligence without becoming obnoxious, a feat for a child of that age.

And so it goes, one flashy sequence after the next. But the limited cohesiveness only underscores how cloying its messaging can be.

Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is pretty smart. However, the emotion doesn't entirely register, despite presenting a story about a daughter desperately trying to find her father. The team includes Director of Photography Tobias Schliessler, Production Designer Naomi Shohan, Film Editor Spencer Averick and Costume Designer Paco Delgado. This is is a kids movie through and through, and I'd gladly take into account youngsters' less cynical reviews when reconsidering "Wrinkle" down the line. That's why we still talk about the intelligent world-building of "Harry Potter" and "The Wizard of Oz", where social hierarchies and centralized governments are essential to the makeup.

Not every choice in A Wrinkle in Time works out in DuVernay's favor; some of the creative decisions are carried over from L'Engle's novel, which has inflamed the imaginations of readers for decades but has also been considered unfilmable for a number of reasons.

That's not the goal of "Wrinkle", though. There are occasional moments of inspiration and the visuals do impress, but one leaves the movie longing for a more emotional experience. "To have a film with so much inclusion and representation is important because I feel like representation matters". Others will surely embrace it without hesitation. "A Wrinkle in Time" uses spirituality, love, hope and so much more to help Meg realize her value and her place in the world.
