Geneva: Toyota Supra Concept showcased

Toyota says the "90" racing number alludes to the Supra's codename and is confirmation that a fifth-generation model is in the production pipeline. The Toyota Supra also competed in American IMSA sportscar racing in the 1980s and twice appeared at Le Mans in the 1990s. As the interior is racing spec, it does not have much in common with what we will get in the road vehicle, but it is serious business with a competition steering wheel, stripped-out carpets, full roll cage and racing driver seat. The Supra will be jointly developed with BMW, who'll use the same platform for its upcoming BMW Z4.

The will they, won't they tale of Toyota's new Supra is one of the motoring industry's longest running stories and worst kept secrets.

Toyota presented the GR Supra Racing Concept at the Geneva Auto Show, which hints at what the future Supra will look like. It continues with the front-engined, rear-wheel drive layout.

Thousands march in Slovakia for slain journalist
Slovak authorities have reportedly released at least six of the seven people detained in connection with the murder. The seven Italians were taken into custody on Thursday in police raids in the eastern town of Michalovce.

It features several racing elements, such as a large rear wing, lightweight front and rear bumpers and front splitter, and windscreen and side windows made out of lightweight plastic. When it's time to stop, Brembo brakes will bring the GR Supra Racing Concept to a halt in a hurry. The inside of the doors have carbon-fiber panels, the steering wheel has a quick-release mechanism and, as expected, there's a roll cage in there to ensure the driver's safety. Competition safety requirements are met by a full roll cage and fire extinguishers, and the fuel and brake lines, pedal box, battery and wiring looms are all created to competition standard.

Toyota doesn't reveal what's under the bonnet but it's rumoured to be BMW's 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol straight-six with 240kW on tap. Having had confirmation for a while now that they will in fact be bringing the Supra name back from the dead, many details seem to have been leaked ahead of time by Japanese media. Fingers crossed that Toyota's knowhow in producing fine-handling cars, combined with the expertise of BMW, will ensure the driving experience will sate the appetite of enthusiasts.
