Lawsuit: Google Hiring Practices Discriminated Against Whites, Asians

YouTube, on the other hand, says Wilberg's allegations are off-base. Wilberg alleges that Google set quotas for the hiring of minorities at the company which resulted in discrimination against white and Asian male employees. The paper notes that 69% of Google's employees are men, while 91% of the company's workforce is white or Asian-a number that's stayed relatively the same for the past three years.

Former Google recruiter Arne Wilberg, who worked in the company's YouTube division, also alleges that the Mountain View tech giant systematically discriminated against older engineers in its hiring and sought to purge internal correspondence about its illegal employment practices.

According to Wilberg, Google seems to prioritize diversity in its workforce over competence, alleging that he was sacked as a result of his complaints to managers in which he states the company's "illegal and discriminatory hiring practices", pointing to management deleting emails that held content regarding various supposedly clandestine hiring choices.

Google, the first major Silicon Valley tech firm to publicly disclose its diversity statistics, said in a statement it would fight the lawsuit vigorously.

A Google spokesperson has stated that the company plans to defend itself entirely against the lawsuit, "We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity", said the spokesperson.

Wilberg said his manager sent an email to his team a year ago, telling them to only accept candidates from "historically underrepresented groups" for a particular job opening.

The Wall Street Journal said that Wilberg's coworkers corroborated his story and said that Youtube's hiring initiatives were minority quota based and that some recruiters complained that this practice was unfair.

The lawsuit describes several instances in which Wilberg says he raised concerns with supervisors and human resources executives only to allegedly be retaliated against.

Google has been training its employees how to recognize unconscious bias, but Damore's memo is proof that diversity is not always seen as part of Google's cultural values. The former employee says he was sacked in late 2017, after complaining about its hiring policies.

Google is facing diverse diversity lawsuits. In another encounter, Wilberg recalls, "One team member complained that managers were speaking about blacks like they were objects".

In response to the lawsuit, Leslie Miley, a former engineering director at Slack and former engineering manager at Twitter, tweeted about the irony of Wilberg's concern for fair labor practices, which did not seem to apply to Google's largely homogenous workforce or its gender pay gap, the subject of a Department of Labor investigation as well as a civil suit. It's alleged the company instigated a policy to further workforce diversity.
